  • : WWW.LAST.FM
go there now!! i haven't been listening to cds anymore. My days are just filled with listening to stuff off of this site. I mainly listen to my recommended music and have discovered tons of shit to buy. (ac newman, metric, ratatat, islands, rogue wave, etc.) see my profile to see what i have been digging on. (*****)

    death cab for cutie: plans
love it, love it. but i love everything mr. gibbard does. more mature sounding album. it took a while, but finally grew on me and now it is my favorite Death Cab album. (*****)

  • The Weakerthans -

    The Weakerthans: Left and Leaving
hands down, one of my favorite albums. redesigned it for my sagmeister class. enough said. (*****)

  • Jawbreaker -

    Jawbreaker: Dear Diary
my favorite jawbreaker album. many would arge with me about this, but realize that i listened to this not after it first came out, but years later when the lyrics and the music matched my life. I would have hated it when it came out. guess i had to mature to get was it was about. (*****)

  • Jonathan Safran Foer: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

Jonathan Safran Foer: Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
liked it, but not as much as the hype. Loved the combo of images and type that he had going on. (of course it stole this designer's heart.) One thing that was amazing though is that he had me on the verge of tears more then any book that I have read in the past 10 years. (***)

  • Jonathan Lethem: Motherless Brooklyn

    Jonathan Lethem: Motherless Brooklyn
re-read this for my book club. forgot how good it is. Nice mystery/ganster novel set in present day Broolyn with the most unexpected main character you'd expect for this type of book. (****)

  • David Sedaris: Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim

David Sedaris: Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim
can't go wrong with mr. sedaris. Don't find this as funny as his past books, but it is just as good. Feels like he has gotten a bit more fuzzy and retrospective. (****)

long time…

no blog. been dilequent in updating this thing. I've been bad. But i've been busy. Since leaving school last year in May, my life has been good, but busy. So if you have the time and the inclination, please read on. I'll breakdown for you what has been going on.

After I left school, I freelanced for about six months. here is a breakdown of where I went.

DKNY: Spent three months at DKNY working with my friend Brigitte. I designed marketing books that showcased all the DKNY accessories (shoes and bags mainly) and designed fabric patterns. Also designed some bag hardware too. It was fun being there. The hours were totally crazy (10 hours to 12 hours), but it was fun to work with someone as talented and amazing as Brigitte. We made some pretty kick ass stuff that made it to production. So yes, there are bags out there with my designwork on it. Also scored some shoes (they have over-runs and my feet are the perfect size 7 which is what all their samples come in. Also did foot modeling work for them too sometimes. Me! A Model!! who knew?)

VICTORIA SECRETS: after DKNY, I landed a full-time freelance gig at VS. I worked on all the instore signage. Was there about month and a half. The pace was crazy, but my hours returned to normal 9-6. Somedays though there was no lunch which wasn't fun. The design wasn't as fun as DKNY, but the people were amazing. In my short time there, I made some friends that I still go see and hang out with. Great experience.

ETC: did tons of other random freelance work. Did an entire website for a publishing company in chicago, logo for a start up handbag company, one week as a production manager, website design for my favorite web company, Funny Garbage. It was good to be back at FG. they are like my family. I fit in there so well. Maybe someday they will be able to hire me. Eiiiiiii!!!! FG even recommend me for a freelance gig. I have building animated gifs for a teenage boy joke site (one a day). Good stuff.

Finally, after all this freelance, I got a full-time job at the Visual Art Press. The VA Press publishes and designs everything from magazines to catalogues to invites for the School of Visual Arts. I had interned for them last summer and freelanced for a month or so in the spring so I knew everyone at the press and knew the job well. They loved my portfolio so I took the job. I am an Associate Art Director and I get to work on the bigger, large scale projects at the school. It is a good gig and I am happy. I am still doing good design that makes me happy.

Even though I have a job, I still do design work for DKNY. Ever season I come up with patterns for bags, shoes and now, scarfs. It is fun and I am happy to try my hand at it.

Other big things that happened were that I met at great guy and moved in with him. His name is Jesse and he was in my master's program. He is a year below me (so he is working on his thesis now. scary). He is the art director of Comedy Central's website and has the most contagious laugh i have ever heard. We started dating in the spring and have been together ever since. We live together in Jackson Heights, Queens in our 1 bedroom co-op with a cat named Cat. I am digging finally have found a wonderful guy that supports me and loves me and makes me happy (especially after all the assholes i've dated and had broke hearts over).

Still working on getting my thesis lauched. I have about 10 more hours of coding and then I should be done. Need to find time to do that I am I golden.

Living in NYC is great, but I still miss the midwest. The East Coast is just different. I don't know if I will ever feel completely at home here. Plus, I just don't have the circle of friends and aquantences that I had in Chicago. I know that comes with time, but I wonder if I will ever get that here. Now, I am older and don't go out and mingle as much as I once did. Plus, the people I meet here my age have established groups of friends and they are hard to break into. But, besides all that, I am happy here. I have Brigitte and Becky and Araba and others. I don't plan on returning to the midwest anytime soon. I do love it out here even though I get loney and miss people. Plus, I think Chicago would seem too slow after being here. NYC seduces you slowly. Also the best design is here. If I want to do good work, I need to be here and I would put up with a little loneliness to do that.

Other stuff happened, like I went with Jesse and a bunch of his friends to Munich, Germany this summer. We ate tons of meat and beer. It was great fun. I'll write about that in another email once I put up my flickr photos. Not today though. I've had a crazy week at the press and on top of that, I've been working nights on stuff for DKNY. I just want to go home tonight and have a beer or two and relax. maybe watch a movie. Hope this has caught you up. I am well and fine.

everything i love

I have been in love with the newest death cab for cutie album for awhile. Today, Jesse, sent me a link to Jeffery Brown doing an animation for Death Cab song. Two things I love together!! I am so happy. Death Cab has been releasing a video done by a different artist every week since the beginning of the year. Please go check out this weeks and sign up to get updates on the ones to come. For the ones you missed, you'll have to wait until the DVD. sigh.

i am published x2

check out punk planet this month. (PP67 Art and Design Issue) I have an article in the static section about the design blog, Speak Up! It is the first piece that i've written in over 5 years. I am happy with it and want to continue writting. Tune in for more updates on articles. Run out and get this now since it is on the newstands now. Great stuff.

Also I am in the upcoming issue of STEP magazine. My turkey invite for my friend Val won an award of Typeographic Excellence from the Type Diretor's Club and 20 of the most interesting winners were published in STEP. Yeehaw! Run out and get this one too.

i am a master

After two years, I am finally done. I have my Masters Degree. I completed my thesis presentation last night so i am done. I still have to finish my thesis book and go through our thesis exhibit, but the presentation last night was the big hurdle in getting my degree. And now it is finished. I thought i would be more excited at this time, but I am just indifferent. I think it will hit me later. I still can't believe that i am done. This past two years flew by super fast and part of me is sad to be done with this experience, but, I am happy too. I am looking forward to getting back to having a life, a job and money. But i will miss these late nights and the intense addreline rush that comes from working in such a fast paced environment.

art to pay attention to

just got two lovely silkscreened posters in the mail today. I ordered them from dan mccarthy, a silkscreen poster artist out of boston. beautiful, simple posters with lovely compositions and colors. here is one. here is another.

also this great NYC artist collective called Goldmine Shithouse is having a gallery show at the McCaig-Welles Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The opening is Saturday, April 16, 2005 from 7-10pm and the show runs from April 16, 2005- May 8, 2005. Go check out their stuff.

shooting cop

found this on the design observer. a cop who shoots beautiful photographs of his/her job.

bunny pet

ever wonder what type of pet momus has? well, it appears to be a cute, black bunny. This give me hope that at my future design studio I too will be able to have a bunny running underfoot.

yes. sometimes even i can be girly

33THEY DISCONTINUED MY LIPSTICK!!!! I AM PISSED AND SAD. bet all of you out there never would have thought these words would have even pasted through my head let alone utter from my mouth or be written down. but shit, i love my lipstick. the color is great on me and it comes in this easy to use pencil so you get the control of lipliner and the lovelyness of a lipstick. I've been using it for the past 8 years and I would stock up and buy 2-4 pencils at a time. True, i've dabbled in other lipsticks through out the years, but within a week or two i always come back to lip express by maybelline AND NOW IT IS GONE!!! sigh. i sent maybelline a note asking them what is up and if there is another color for me as a replacement for my shade. also as a desparate last attempt to get my hands on my lipstick, i bid on an auction on ebay that has my color. my mama who always wanted me to be a bit more girly would be proud.

ps-just found a place in england that has some. i can get 4 pencils shipped here for $30. that is $7.50 per pencil which is what most lipstick cost in the store. hmmmm.

old. again.

so i've officially moved into my thirties. On friday, I celebrated my thirty-first birthday. Funny, it sounds super, super old, but I don't feel that way. Actually, most of my classmates and aquantances have a hard time believing that i am thirty-one. I've had many people this past week gasp and say, "No way! you don't look any older then 26." I am totally flattered, but a bit fearful that maybe it is my clothing that is making me look young. I don't want to be one of those people who look old, but wear clothing like a 24 year-old. simply tacky. (turns out that i am wrong. after probing a couple friends, my energy, attitude and my face all seem young. phew! i feel much better.)

The birthday was great. I was super tired and had to work, but I had cake and many birthday wishes which just made everything great. Highlights were: sushi dinner with john and daniel and having drinks with friends the night before. MFA design (first and second year) friends showed up along with some MFA illustration kids. Becky made it out and gave me this great (and well-designed) book called On Bullshit and a gift certificate to accupuncture (sweet!). And lovely bridgette also came out with her boy. She gave me a DKNY bag that she had designed that was just back from getting produced along with this sweet neon green bag that is so ugly it is lovely. The night was rounded out with visits from jake and greg. all and all a good birthday.

thesis is moving along. i am a bit freaked right now. Because of two freelance jobs, i haven't had time to really touch my thesis in a week-and-a-half so i am behind. but i will hopefully be able to catch up this week. If not, then there will just have to be a couple of all nighters before i finish everything up in may.

here are some photos that i took for the site. pretty good for a non-professional food photographer working with out a stylist, studio or real lights.
